A Scottish Girl In New York: I'm Not A Shopaholic, I'm Helping The Economy

I'm currently in NYC for the September weekend and over the four days I'm here, I plan on visiting a lot of places: from the theatre on broadway to restaurants and of course the shops that line 5th Avenue and beyond. My memory's of the trip will get hazy over time as memories do so I thought doing a mini blog series: A Scottish Girl In New York would help keep those memories alive. If you haven't read the 1st instalment, click here.

Where do you start when presented with shopping in New York. Do you meander through the streets of Soho, cut through times square or do you lovingly glide in and out of shops on 5th Avenue? The answer is, well the answer is them all, there is so many places to shop in New York that there isn't one specific place to start or end.

Being on a girls holiday, shopping was a priority, you can't go to New York and not shop. That would be like going to the swimming pool and not going for a swim. You just can't not do it. With us staying on 55th street and 7, we thought that it'd be best to work from Soho, gradually coming back to end at the hotel. Sounds simple enough but boy there isn't enough hours in the day. After tackling the New York Subway, which was a task in itself with A lines and B lines and N lines, we hit a street in Soho. We wandered until we found the first street lined with shops which revealed another, and another, all with big names like Guess and Prada and little quirky stores and shops you can't find at home. After drifting in and out of shops for a few hours we decided it was time for a little pit stop. We found a little corner cafe where we had some sandwiches and mimosas. It definitely wasn't a tourist stop, it was full of families out for brunch and even the family pets lying under the outside tables shading themselves from the sun. It was a great place to chill out, enjoy the weather and plan the next leg of our trip.

After battling the subway again, this time with much more success, we headed for Times Square and 5th Avenue stopping at M&M world for some tasty gifts, taking a quick look in MAC and having another cocktail stop. Shopping is thirsty work. By now I have lost count of the number of shops we have been in but Blair Waldorf would have been proud of our efforts.

We rounded out our day of shopping with a trip to Tiffany and Co. I was as excited as a 5 year old at Christmas at the prospect of visiting Tiffany's. I had never been but I have heard about and seen the fabulous things that lie in store.  Could there really be a more perfect shop to end our day? No there wasn't, Tiffany's was every bit a magical as I would have expected from the guarded entrance to the glass cabinets that filled the 1st floor. Everything in that place sparkled as though it had been touched by pixie dust. I could have wandered the floors for hours. Settling on a beautiful silver and blue heart necklace we made our way back to the hotel, feet crying in protest at the amount of walking, to enjoy what was left of happy hour.

Have you been shopping in New York? Is there anywhere you adore going? Let me know in the comments.
